A written plan, and a fixed price for building it

€350, plus VAT where applicable

  • Credited against the project
  • Yours to keep, whatever you decide

01

When you need this, and when you do not

  1. If one meeting settles what gets built and what is left out

With nothing left that has to be investigated first, you do not need this page: that is a free quote, and you can ask for one now.

  2. But sometimes one meeting is not enough

The content is not ready, or something has to be worked out or investigated before anyone can put a price on it.

This is what happens instead. I work out what you are actually building, write it down with a price against each stage, and if my price does not suit you, the report is yours to take to another developer.

The fee comes off the first stage.

02

How it runs

  1. However many conversations it takes

We talk until the questions are answered, and however many conversations that takes, the fee does not change.

  2. The thinking is mine to do, not yours.

Then I go away and think it through, and what comes back is a document rather than a conversation. That is most of what the fee pays for.

  3. How long it takes

I do not put a number of weeks on this, because most of the waiting is on answers only you can give. Once the questions are answered, the report follows.

03

What the report contains

Every report, whatever you are building:

  1. the technical decisions: what it is built with, and where the content and data live
  2. what is left out of the first version
  3. what you have to supply, and by when
  4. the fixed price, stage by stage
  5. an estimate in weeks, not a date
  6. where it runs while it is being built, and how it is handed over to you

Then, depending on the project:

Moving an existing site

  • the verdict: whether moving it is worth doing at all
  • what the site is made of
  • every address on it, and where each one goes afterwards
  • what moves across as it is, what is rebuilt, and what cannot come at all
  • forms, search and comments, and what replaces them
  • where the content will live afterwards, and how you edit it
  • hosting, DNS, and where the mail is delivered
  • how correctness is proven on the day of the switch

A new site

  • the pages, as a site map
  • what each page is for
  • any addresses the old site had, and where each one goes
  • what the site connects to: forms, booking, a newsletter, maps
  • how you edit it once it is yours

A business tool

  • what it does, step by step
  • who uses it, and what each person can see and do
  • what it connects to

04

What it costs, and what happens to the fee

€350, plus VAT where applicable.

  1. Credited against the project.

It comes off the first stage, and it is a credit rather than a discount: the number is fixed, and there is nothing to negotiate.

  2. Not refundable, and due even if you decide not to go ahead.

What you are paying for is the reading, the thinking and the verdict, and you get all three either way.

  3. The report is yours to keep.

Including in the case you probably worry about: if the price is more than you want to spend, you take the document to somebody else and they start from a written brief instead of from an email. If you want a sense of the number before you spend anything, what a project costs explains what drives it.

05

After the report

  • The build runs in the stages the report names, and each stage is paid in full before it starts.

There are always at least two, even on a small project, so you are never asked for the whole cost of something you have not seen yet.

  • The price is fixed for the scope in the report. The weeks are an estimate, not a date.

If the scope changes, I re-quote before the work continues rather than after it appears on an invoice.

How it starts

Nothing on this site takes payment. We talk first, and if roadmapping is the right next step I send the payment link by email.

Tell me what you have and where you want to get to. If one meeting settles it after all, I will say so, and the quote costs you nothing.
